Continence Care and Bowel Management

Urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence are commonly encountered in nursing home residents, and are associated with significant morbidity and utilization of health care resources. The purpose of this course is to maintain an interdisciplinary team approach to continence care and bowl management, to facilitate improvement in bladder and bowel function in those who can improve, and to prevent deterioration of bladder/bowel function. Material covered includes physiology of urinary elimination, maintaining normal elimination, urinary incontinence and management, types of urinary incontinence, physiology of defecation, maintaining regular defecation, bowel incontinence and interventions, and assessment and documentation.
