Can you believe we have approached the end of the year? How is this possible?! Where has 2025 gone? As we look back on the year that was, this is a great opportunity to reflect on your health and safety program. Is it working well? Are there areas for improvement? What can be learned from 2025?

There are many ways to evaluate your health and safety program’s effectiveness. To get a true picture of the impact of your health and safety programs, it’s important to evaluate in various ways. Don’t just look at the stats, consider the big picture.

With that being said, a good place to start is by evaluating the effectiveness of your health and safety efforts by looking at the stats. Review any incident or near miss reports. Are there any trends? Is there an increase in slip, trip, and fall incidents in the winter? Was heat stress noted in the summer months? Think about the root cause of those incidents. Have those causes been addressed and controlled? Is there more that can be done?

After reviewing the documentation, consider what the impact of your health and safety program is. Do employees have the same interpretation of your health and safety efforts as you? There are many ways to gather this information. You can complete surveys, host town hall meetings to discuss your health and safety program, or implement a health and safety concerns box. This allows employees to provide feedback anonymously.

Use the feedback to plan your next steps. If you find that hazards are uncontrolled or the perception of your health and safety efforts are lackluster, don’t dwell on the past. Learn from and accept the provided feedback. Use this feedback to make adjustments to your programs. Perhaps communication was lacking, or there was a lack of understanding of a process. Revisit these identified items and work towards improvement.

Regardless of the size of your workplace, use your committees, representatives, or designates to help improve your program. They can be an

excellent representation for your organization and can help drive positive change.
